Magdeburg, the capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Cultural History Museum traces the city's importance in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park. The Anna Ebert Bridge was opened to traffic in 1882. This was at a time when the traffic situation was quite different. The conversion for electric trams, for example, did not take place until 1899. Before that, the trams were still pulled by horses. The structure was not given the name "Anna-Ebert-Brücke" until the 1950s. Before that, it was called "Lange Brücke" (Long Bridge), just like its wooden predecessor. The floods of 2013 damaged the bridge so badly that it had to be secured as of 2016 and can only be used under certain conditions. With the completion of the New Pylon Bridge over the Old Elbe, the bridge from 1882 will be largely decoupled from traffic and will be restored to its original condition.
