Magdeburg Cathedral is the city's landmark. The cathedral is the first Gothic cathedral to be designed from the outset and the earliest completed Gothic cathedral on German soil.
The Cleve bastion is the southern fortification on the Elbe and the south-eastern end of the former Magdeburg fortress. The medieval defence tower "Cleve Tower" forms the central element here. In 1709, the Cleve bastion merged with the former "Gebhardt roundabout", which dates back to the siege of Magdeburg during the Thirty Years' War.
Magdeburg, the state capital of Saxony-Anhalt, is a central German city on the River Elbe. Magdeburg's Gothic cathedral is located in the centre and is the burial church of Otto the Great, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire. The Museum of Cultural History traces the importance of the city in the Middle Ages with exhibitions on archaeology and local history. The Romanesque-style monastery of Our Lady houses a contemporary art gallery and a sculpture park.
