About ‘Mangrove in the still bay’ by Marald Bes

A single mangrove in shallow water, in an Indonesian bay in Lombok, at the moment the light goes.

The tree is broad and low, with a crown that spreads wider than it stands tall. Its branches hang down to just above the surface.

What holds it up you only see when you look: under the crown sits a tangle of stilt roots going into the water. It is not standing on a little island, it is standing in the sea.

The water is flat and has taken the colour of the sky. Peach and pale yellow at the top, grey-blue where the clouds reflect. There is just enough ripple to break the reflection without taking it away.

Left and right two dark headlands push into the frame, with a distant ridge behind them in blue-grey. The tree sits exactly in the gap between them.

Warm, and completely still.

On a wall this suits a quiet room, alongside soft colours and linen. It is not a picture you tire of. For anyone who likes looking at water or trees or just tranquility
