The enchanting town on the hill above Trapani
Erice, an enchanting medieval village, sits majestically on a hill high above the Sicilian coast. With its rich history, breathtaking architecture and incredible views, it attracts visitors from all over the world.
The history of Erice goes back a long way. Various cultures settled here in pre-Roman times, including Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans. In the Middle Ages, the town was shaped by Normans and Hohenstaufen and flourished as a centre of trade and culture.
A stroll through the narrow, cobbled streets of Erice will take you back in time. The well-preserved medieval buildings, including churches, palaces and fortresses, bear witness to the town's rich history. Visit the imposing Venus Castle, which once served as a Norman fort and offers a breathtaking view of the sea. Admire the Romanesque cathedral from the 14th century with its impressive façade and ornate mosaics inside.
Erice is also known for its numerous churches and monasteries. The Chiesa di San Martino, a Gothic church from the 14th century, houses valuable works of art and offers an impressive panoramic view. The 14th century monastery of Sant'Alberto is a place of peace and contemplation, inhabited by the Augustinian monks.
In addition to its rich history, Erice also offers breathtaking natural beauty. The surrounding landscape is characterised by lush olive groves, fragrant pine forests and blooming gardens. Hike along the picturesque paths and enjoy the marvellous views of the sea and the surrounding countryside.
