In the mountains of Picos de Europa (northern Spain) lies the village of Bulnes. The Funicular de Bulnes, a kind of train that goes right through the rocks and starts in the town of Poncebos, transports you to the top. The tunnel is man-made and in 7 minutes you will be at the top. There is also a footpath. And so you arrive at this town of Bulnes. The inhabitants of the stone houses with red roofs were very isolated from civilisation before the Cable Car.
In the village, a steep path leads to a viewpoint. It takes about 15 minutes to get there. At this point, you can see the highest mountain in the area: Naranjo de Bulnes. On the way back to the village, you look over the village of Bulnes surrounded by rocks. Here the sun shines on the rugged rocks and roofs with an impressive cloudscape above.
The village has a few catering establishments so it's great to linger for a while. The fast-flowing Rio Tejo river flows through the village and can also be the start or end point of a beautiful hike in the mountains.
