On the edge of the Himalayas in Nepal against the border of Tibet lies the autonomous Kingdom of Mustang. Trekking through this Tibetan landscape is a unique experience. The trek passes through medieval Kagbeni and goes to the capital Lo Manthang.
A permit must be purchased to enter the area. Not many permits are issued. A road has been built by China for a few years now, allowing jeeps, buses and motorbikes to pass through the area. This road is made of stone, with lots of bumps and potholes. People don't call it "Dancing Road" for nothing. The road opens up the area, which is nice for residents. Unfortunately, the road is obvious in the landscape and causes a lot of dust.
It is a dry, rugged, barren and desolate mountainous landscape and while hiking, you meet very few people. It is a region of rich Tibetan culture, with several Buddhist monasteries. The colourful rock formations are impressive and until a decade ago, several caves were still used as homes. These can also still be visited.
The picture shows a water basin in the foreground. The barren hills of Kagbeni in Mustang are in the centre of the picture and the snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas can be seen in the background. Part of the road can also be seen.
