About the artwork

This picture shows the contrast between nature and the human barrier in an abandoned area overgrown with grass and trees. A massive barbed wire fence, once an impenetrable border, now lies in the grass, overgrown and almost forgotten. Nature has found its way back, the tall grass and lush bushes embrace the once forbidding structures, while a massive tree in the background dominates the sky and fills the picture with its vibrancy. The old wall of the building next to it is marked by cracks and discolouration - traces of a long standstill and the unstoppable effects of time and weather.

The scene radiates a special mixture of strength and fragility, as the once impregnable barrier is now little more than a relic. The barbed wire that once served to keep people out is now a silent witness to the transition as nature reclaims everything man-made. This image symbolises the transience of human intervention and the power of nature to reclaim any space if given time.
