About ‘Northern Lights 4’ by Willem Klopper

The polar lights (aurora polaris) are a geomagnetic light phenomenon in the upper layers of the Earth’s atmosphere. They are also referred to as the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) and the Southern Lights (aurora australis). Appearance The polar lights are usually visible as a faint glow or as moving arcs, beams of light or curtains of light. Sometimes an arc appears above the northern horizon from which beams of light shoot upwards like searchlights. Very rarely, the aurora takes on a fiery character, displaying a remarkable tremor and relatively rapid pulsating movement, comparable to the dancing of candle flames. Some of these dancing rays appear to rotate, with a ray shifting slightly to one side and disappearing, to make way for a new ray, which in turn also shifts to one side and disappears, to make way for yet another new ray. This staggered movement can occur relatively quickly. In and around the geomagnetic zenith, the so-called ‘crown phenomenon’ can be observed, whereby the rays appear to emanate from, or be drawn towards, a single focal point. Towards the end of an auroral display, diffuse-looking patches emerge that are strongly reminiscent of the artificial lighting in the cloudy night sky above urbanised areas.
