The classical poet Ovid describes how Orpheus enchanted nature with his beautiful lyre-playing. The theme was popular with 17th-century animal painters, as it gave them the chance to depict many different animal species. Potter shows here that his repertoire included more than the usual farm animals. He painted dozens of native and exotic beasts. In the centre is Orpheus with his harp.
