Utrecht's Oudegracht canal is one of the most characteristic and enchanting locations in the Netherlands. This picturesque canal traverses the historic city centre and is a symbol of Utrecht's rich history and unique charm.
The Oudegracht was originally dug in the 12th century as part of Utrecht's city wall. What makes this canal so special is that it is surrounded on both sides by charming yards, narrow wharf cellars that were once used for storage and now serve as atmospheric restaurants, shops and homes. The wharves contribute to the unique atmosphere of Oudegracht and create an idyllic image of Dutch architecture.
Along Oudegracht, you will also find historic buildings, bridges and trees that provide a beautiful backdrop for a stroll along the water. The Dom tower, the famous symbol of Utrecht, rises majestically at the end of the canal and offers an impressive view of the city.
The Oudegracht is not only a tourist attraction, but also a lively part of the city where locals and visitors gather to enjoy cafés, events and festivals. In short, Oudegracht is a timeless and enchanting location that reflects Utrecht's rich history and vibrant atmosphere.
