A reed is used in certain musical instruments, reed instruments such as the oboe, clarinet, bassoon and saxophone. However, the plant from which the reed is cut is arrow reed (Arundo donax, the bamboo-like Spanish reed). Blowing over (a small piece of) the reed causes it to vibrate, creating sound.
