Volkswagen founded the first Beetle plant in Mexico in Puebla in 1964. Production of the VW Beetle (known as the "Vocho" in Mexico) began there in 1967 and quickly developed into a great success. Puebla became the most important production site for the Beetle outside Germany.
The VW Beetle was produced in Mexico until 2003, longer than in any other country. The last Beetle rolled off the production line on 30 July 2003, marking the official end of global Beetle production. Today, the VW plant in Puebla is one of the largest automobile plants in North America and produces models such as the Jetta and the Tiguan.
