About the artwork
This picture shows a rusty, sawn-off bar that was once part of a cell in an abandoned prison. The condition of the metal, which has weathered over the years, symbolises the decay and transience of this place. The bars, which once provided security and boundaries, are now overgrown by nature, while the view through the gap in the bars falls on the green surroundings and the distant tiled roof.
The rusty remains of the bar are a silent testimony to the time that has passed this place by. While the outside world appears green and vibrant, the interior of the prison remains dark, deserted and untouched by nature. The contrast between the rusted metal and the lush greenery in the background symbolises the transition from a once strictly monitored environment to a place that nature is slowly reclaiming.
This image evokes a feeling of isolation and melancholy in the viewer. The bars, once insurmountable, are now only a reminder of the building's former function. The sky is covered in heavy clouds, emphasising the oppressive atmosphere of the abandoned prison.
