About ‘Saint Jerome, Jheronimus Bosch’
Saint Jerome, Jheronimus Bosch (1485)
St Jerome held special significance for Bosch, who saw him as a role model for his scholarship and moralism. The fourth-century saint, one of the great Latin Church fathers, abandoned public life at thirty-eight for an ascetic existence in Palestine. In the painting, Jerome lies prostrate in prayer among exotic plants and rocks, his lion rendered as a small, tame companion - a reference to the legend of the thorn he removed from its paw. Extensive restoration and scientific analysis in 2015–2016 confirmed the work as central to Bosch's output, painted entirely by his own hand, and dated between 1485 and 1495.
