About ‘Samet Nangshe at sunrise’ by Marald Bes

The Samet Nangshe viewpoint above Phang Nga Bay, a few minutes after sunrise.

The sun sits just above the horizon and lands exactly in the gap between two islands, small and fierce, with a golden path running over the water towards me.

The rest of the bay is still in mist. The limestone rocks stand there as paler and paler silhouettes, layer behind layer, until the furthest row can no longer be told apart from the sky.

Along the bottom the mangrove coast lies in an almost black green, with a few lighter patches where water runs between the trees. Look carefully and there is a roof or two in there.

The sky is the quietest part: peach fading into pale yellow, with a bank of cloud catching the light from below.

You climb up here in the dark to be in time, and it stays cold and damp until the sun arrives. It is one of the finest sunrises you will find anywhere in Thailand.

For the traveller who still has this spot on their list.
