The Bastei Bridge is the oldest and most famous tourist attraction in Saxon Switzerland.
In the background, surrounded by morning mist, you can see the Lilienstein.
The view across the Elbe valley to the table mountains of Saxon Switzerland and far into the neighbouring landscape of the Lusatian Highlands and the Eastern Ore Mountains is world-famous. At a distance of 130 metres and at a height of 194 metres above the level of the Elbe, the view from the sandstone plateau is unforgettable. The Bastei area with several views is freely accessible all year round.
The existing sandstone bridge was built in 1851. It is 76.50 metres long and spans the 40-metre-deep gorge with 7 arches.
The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are located in the border region between Saxony and the Czech Republic, around 50 kilometres south of Dresden. The German part of the Elbe Sandstone Mountains is also known as Saxon Switzerland - the Czech part is known as Bohemian Switzerland. The landscape, characterised by bizarre rock formations, lies south-east of Dresden on both sides of the Elbe in the district of Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains. The Elbe Sandstone Mountains are also known as the "Grand Canyon of the East" due to the uniqueness of their rock formations.
There are many impressive and famous excursion destinations in Saxon Switzerland. Some of these include the Bastei with its impressive rock formation and the Bastei Bridge, Königstein Fortress, the Schrammsteine, the Kuhstall, the Lilienstein and the popular Malerweg hiking trail.
