This photographic, abstract architectural image was taken on 26 December 2024 in the early afternoon hours with the NIKON D800 (lens: NIKKOR 24.0-70.0 mm f/2.8). I discovered this fountain in Catania on the island of Sicily.
The reduced colour rendition in classic black and white lends the motif an elegant and timeless atmosphere.
The water dynamics of fountains are based on the principle of water pressure, which today is usually generated by electric pumps that transport water upwards. In the past, the pressure was generated by the gravity of a high water tank, the height of which determined the maximum jet height. In addition, the shape of the nozzle mouthpiece influences the shape and pattern of the water jet, while the continuous circulation of water improves the water quality and introduces oxygen.
Basic principles of water dynamics
Pressurisation:
Today: electric pumps draw water from a reservoir (e.g. pond or basin) and push it up through pipes, building up pressure.
In the past: The water was channelled through the pipes by gravity from a higher location (e.g. water tower, natural slope), with the height of the reservoir determining the pressure and jet height.
Jet shape and height:
Nozzle: the shape of the mouthpiece at the end of the pipe determines the shape of the water jet.
Height: The height of the water jet is directly dependent on the water pressure. However, the maximum height is always slightly lower than the original height of the water tank.
Regulation: The water pressure can be regulated using sliders to control the height of the water jet.
Water quality and water circulation:
Aeration: the constant movement and circulation of water through fountains provides improved oxygenation, which increases water quality and reduces the build-up of dirt and algae.
