The false gharial (Tomistoma schlegelii), also known as the slender gharial, is a crocodile found in Southeast Asia, primarily in the coastal waters of Malaysia, Indonesia, and Borneo. This species belongs to the Gavialidae family but differs from the true gharial in its smaller size and less specialized snout. The false gharial can reach a length of 4 to 5 meters and has an elongated, narrow head with fine teeth that are excellent for catching fish.
The species is found in rivers, lakes, and coastal waters, where it feeds on meat. It feeds primarily on fish, but will also eat other small animals depending on availability. The false gharial is an excellent swimmer and spends much of its time in the water, although it may also rest on the shore.
The false gharial is endangered due to habitat loss and hunting for its fur. It is listed as "vulnerable" on the IUCN Red List. Conservation measures are needed to preserve the species, including protecting its habitats and preventing illegal hunting.
