The body length of the snowy owl is 55 to 70 cm and it weighs 1 to 2.5 kg. They can reach an average age of 20 years. The snowy owl has a mainly white plumage with black spots. Males and older specimens are whiter than others. The white reflects in the sun, a feature that the birds would use to signal their presence in their territory. The face, throat and breast are the whitest and are placed in the sun the most. The whitest birds may also take advantage of the albedo of snow, possibly selecting lower, less visible perches than spotted specimens. The insulation provided by the snowy owl's plumage is extraordinarily developed. To begin with, this bird is almost entirely feathered. Its beak is short and only the tip protrudes. The eyes are protected by long dense eyelashes. The legs are wrapped in long feathery 'pants', which extend to the claws. Underneath the tightly fitted layer of feathers, the animal wears warm 'underwear' of fine down. Finally, the structure of the feathers also contributes to their insulation: the core of the feathers is hollow so they can store warm air.
