We reached Cape Town early in the morning towards the end of the PS132 from Bremerhaven to South Africa. It could hardly have been more fitting, as we were treated to a spectacular sunrise. Table Mountain came into view in the west (right) while the sun slowly rose in the east (left). Combining this wide-angle view and the corresponding extreme differences in brightness in one image was only possible by stitching together countless rows of exposures. The movement of the Polarstern as it travelled forwards and the slight rolling and tilting posed a particular challenge for clean shots.
