I was in Rome for a few days for a visit to friends, and of course my camera goes with me then. In advance, I had picked some locations to photograph, and of course the famous spiral staircase in the Vatican Museum was not to be missed.
As far as I am concerned, this is the Rolls-Royce among spiral staircases. The shape, the details, the symmetry, everything fits. I took this shot without an audience, which in itself is a challenge in such a busy museum. But with a steady hand, the right position and, above all, a lot of patience, you get a long way. I made quite a few shots, each time with people in different places, so that I could work on a blank image later in post-processing.
As always, I edit my photos at home at my desk. There I have access to a fast computer, a large screen, a Wacom drawing tablet and various software packages to get the images just right. For this photo, I first superimposed all the shots and then removed the people from the image step by step in Photoshop. Then I started looking for the right colour tones to suit the mood of this staircase, classic, warm and a touch mysterious.
It takes some time, but the end result is worth it: an iconic piece of Rome, captured in tranquillity and perfection.
