About "The 150-meter-high DruidArch in Canyonlands Utah"

by Gerry van Roosmalen

About the artwork

The DruidArch, a 150-meter-high sandstone arch in the Needles section of CanyonLands. A Druid was a priest in the polytheism of the Celts. The name Druidarch is derived from the stone formation Stonehenge which is also believed to be a Druid temple.
Because of the high temperature, over 35 degrees that day, we began our hike a little before sunrise. So the first two hours of the hike we walked in the relative cool. Then it quickly got hotter, and we had to seek shade as much as possible.
The last part of the hike was quite steep and therefore extra tough.
After 12 to 13 kilometers we stood at the foot of the Druidarch, which rose impressively above the surroundings. Here we had the idea of being alone in the world. The silence was deafening, and the one hiker who had also come up to here felt, like us, that this was a location where serene silence and a moment of reflection was most appropriate.
After a while we had to accept the way back. After more than 26 kilometers we were back at our starting point, tired but satisfied.
