About "The Arch Of Progress Panicale Umbria"

by Dorothy Berry-Lound

About the artwork

Panicale is a medieval walled hill town in Umbria, Italy not far from where I live. There are several entrances through the walls via archways and many arches and passageways within the town itself. Here, in this photo art image, we see a beautiful entrance archway with a wooden beamed ceiling (at an interesting angle!). There is a room of a building within the archway, with a window with wooden shutters that is also supported by an archway. As we gaze under the second archway we can see a narrow street continues through a passageway which emerges via yet another archway. And the road sign tells us you can drive this street! Luckily it is one way! Looking at this makes me think back through the centuries, just imagine the horse and carts and manually pulled carts that would have gone under this arch in the past. And now you can drive it - bet you have to pull in your wing mirrors though!
