The leopard (Panthera pardus), also called panther, is a predator in the feline (Felidae) family that is common throughout much of Africa and Asia.
The leopard is a large, muscular feline with short, powerful legs and a long tail. The head is broad and somewhat round in shape with small, round ears. The muzzle is medium-sized, with powerful jaws and long whiskers.
A leopard's fur is covered with many black spots. On the body and upper half of the legs, these are often grouped with brown spots in rosettes. There are also all-black ungrouped spots, mainly on the belly, head and lower legs, but also on the body. The tail is also spotted, from the beginning to the middle, but more ringed at the end. The ground color of most animals is sandy yellow or light brown, but the color can vary greatly, from nearly white to completely black in the black panthers, which live mainly in Indonesia and in the African highlands. The belly, throat and chin are whitish. Color and coat length depend on where they live, yet black and yellow leopard pups can be from the same mother. The fur marking provides camouflage for the animal, making it easy to go unnoticed. The ears are black on the back with prominent white markings in the middle.
