About ‘The Zandmotor at Monster’ by Marald Bes

The Zandmotor at Monster on a grey March day, in black and white.

This beach has only been here since 2011. The sand was pumped up in one great hook off the coast, and the sea has been spreading it along the shore ever since. Hence the name: the sand is the engine.

At the top a heavy closed sky, a narrow band of sea in the middle, and below that a broad plane of wet and dry sand.

Beyond that there is one thing: a slender mast right of centre with a small structure on it, the only upright in the whole frame.

The sand is not flat. Shallow channels run through it where the water pulled back, and there are pale ripples at the front. On the left a dark pool mirrors the sky.

The sea is almost white, lighter than the sky above it. That is exactly the reverse of what you expect, and it is why this photograph exists.

No people. There are a few birds, small, down in the bowl the water has hollowed out of the sand, and far off on the horizon the silhouettes of big ships. After that it is all sand.

Not everyone can live with emptiness on a wall. If you can, this is one of them.
