The largest ship in the world: Pioneering Spirit The Pioneering Spirit is a ship owned by Swiss-Dutch offshore company Allseas. Built at DSME in South Korea and registered under the Maltese flag, it is the largest ship in the world at 382 metres long and 124 metres wide. With these dimensions, it is as big as two supertankers and equal in area to eight football fields.
The Pioneering Spirit can lift and transport large platforms of some 48,000 tonnes from their pedestals in one go instead of in smaller sections. The vessel can also lay pipelines with diameters from 6 to 68 inches for oil and gas transport at depths of up to 3,500 metres at a speed of over seven kilometres a day.
