The monument of Victor Emanuel II (in Italy better known as il Vittoriano) seen from the middle of Piazza Venezia.
The Monument to Victor Emanuel II is a monument in Rome. It was erected in honour of Victor Emanuel II, the first king of the reunited Italy, whose colossal equestrian statue occupies the central position of the whole. Along with him, the monument also honours the unification of Italy and the ideals that the young state promised its citizens.
Victor Emanuel II was king of Sardinia from 1849 and on March 17, 1861 he obtained the title King of Italy, the first king of the united Italy, a title he wore until his death in 1878.
