About the artwork
The canvas reveals a Dutch landscape composed of the silent interplay of three elements. Below is a narrow strip of dense, green grass saturated with northern humidity. Below it is water that catches the sun's rays and reflects them back as a soft silver glow.
But the sky prevails here. It occupies almost the entire space, torn apart by the wind into bizarre cloud shapes behind which a deep blue sky emerges. In atmosphere, this sky is reminiscent of El Greco's View of Toledo: equally restless, tense and alive with a breath of its own.
The composition is reversed compared to the classical painting: here, the gaze is drawn completely upwards, which seems symbolic of the Netherlands, where every day depends on the vagaries of light and shadow. The water immediately reflects the mood of the sky and changes colour with her.
Made in Zutphen, a city of rivers and canals, this landscape captures the essence of Dutch nature - a little land, a lot of water and an endless, determined sky. This work is highly decorative; with its warm colour palette, it fits effortlessly into any interior space.
