About "Tribute to Henri Matisse"

About the artwork

A tribute to Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (1869 -1954) he was a French painter and sculptor. He is known as the forerunner of fauvism, the art movement in which the usually variegated use of color plays the leading role within the composition. He approaches the representation of space in a new way. He depicts space through the application of the warm-cold contrast of color. Warm colors, like yellow, orange and red, tend to come to the fore in a painting. Cold colors, such as green, blue and violet, on the other hand, seem to recede. By arranging cold and warm colors and exploiting other possibilities of color contrast, Matisse creates a visual rhythm. Because of his illness he had to stay in bed a lot, so he developed a new technique and working method. He found the solution in working with dyed paper (papiers gouaches), in which he cut out and tore forms which he then processed as collages 'papiers découpés'. The Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam owns the monumental work "The Parakeet and the Mermaid" (337 x 768.5 cm) from 1952.
