Near the city of Cluj is the Turda Gorge Nature Reserve (Cheile Turzii). The area earned its protected status in 1939 in recognition of its biological and geographical diversity. More than 1000 species of animals and plants live here. The nature reserve is spread over an area of 324 hectares, but the most spectacular part is on the sides of the river Haşde and is 1.3 km long. The river is responsible for the gorge in Jurassic limestone. The highest rocks of the gorge reach to a height of over 300 meters above the valley. Besides high rock walls there are also arcades and more than 50 caves. Most of the caves are quite small, less than 20 meters long, but in the larger ones remains of prehistoric people and animals have been found.
