The wolf (Canis lupus) more specifically the grey wolf, is a mammal in the canine family (Canidae), belonging to the predators (Carnivora).
The wolf occurs in the northern hemisphere. Several subspecies are distinguished, including some that are extinct. The wolf lives in groups with a social structure.
The wolf is the ancestor of the dog (Canis lupus familiaris). A wolf and a dog can produce fertile offspring together, so that, according to a common species concept in biology, they can be considered the same species.
