The Dodevlei is a white clay plain near the better known Sossusvlei, in Namib-Naukluft National Park in Namibia. The Dodevlei is surrounded by some of the highest dunes in the world, the highest of which is 300 to 400 metres high and lies on a sandstone terrace. The clay layer was formed when the river Tsauchab was flooded by rainfall, creating shallow pools where acacia could grow in the abundance of water. Due to a lack of water, the trees died, although a number of plant species can survive on the moisture from the morning fog and the little rainfall, such as the salsola and inara. The remaining skeletons of the trees, which are said to be about 900 years old, have been blackened by the sun. Although they're not petrified, they don't decay because it's too dry.
