D' Old Tollesteeghpoort is a digital artwork that offers a stylised representation of the historic city gate that once gave access to Utrecht. The representation is based on the original facade stone that can be seen today at the Louis Hartlooper Complex. The work does not depict the gate faithfully, but simplifies it into powerful lines and shapes, creating an almost symbolic interpretation of the original structure.
The digital version emphasises the massive contours and robust character of the Tollesteegh Gate, with its distinctive towers and passageway, but also leaves room for abstraction. Subtle colour transitions and textures refer to weathered stone and centuries-old architecture, while the clear composition adds a certain modernity. This creates a tension between past and present, tradition and innovation.
The atmosphere of the artwork evokes a sense of nostalgia, without getting lost in sentiment. The sculpture shows respect for the gate's historical function as access, protection and symbolic boundary. At the same time, the clean digital style invites reinterpretation and imagination, matching the dynamics of the contemporary cityscape.
D'Old Tollesteegh Gate is more than an image; it is a contemporary homage to a vanished piece of city history, captured in a timeless visual language. As such, the artwork fits seamlessly into the atmosphere of the Louis Hartlooper Complex, which is itself a monument where old and new converge.
