The digital artwork "Stew Pears" evokes a sense of quiet tension by subtly disrupting an apparently domestic scene. On a coarse wooden tabletop, in which the natural strips and grain are clearly visible, a glass cover dish filled with dark red stewing pears, gleaming from the port in which they have been stewed, takes centre stage. The glass catches the light in complex ways: reflections dance in the curves of the lid and bowl, adding a sense of depth and fragile beauty.
The bowl's lid is carefully placed: it leans at an angle against one of the bowl's ears, as if it had just been lifted and hastily set aside. The stewing pears seem freshly prepared, steaming still - or at least that is what the warm glow of the light falling through the glass suggests. Their deep colour contrasts with the lighter wood tones of the table, on which the shadows of the bowl and lid are also visible in soft lines.
However, the idyll takes a dark turn: right in front of the bowl lies a chef's knife, sharp and shiny, as if it has just been used. Next to the blade is a small, mysterious pool of blood - just enough to raise questions. Is it an accident in the kitchen? Or something more sinister? The combination of domestic calm and subtle menace makes this work intriguing and layered.
"Stew pears" poetically plays with contrast: the everyday versus the unexpected, the warm versus the cool, the sweet versus the gory.
