Travelling a three-master on the high seas, with no land in sight. Or with a hot-air balloon in one of those wicker baskets. By a steam train with a beautiful cloud of steam hanging from the locomotive above. Or with a small propeller plane floating above the clouds. When I think of travelling, I dream away with images like these. Do you?
Of course, for my holidays, I prefer to travel faster and more efficiently. I don't want to waste all my time travelling to my location. But still...
This photo was taken from a small plane. Not a tiny one with 6 seats, but still after all Boeing was a small one. With real propellers. We flew from São Jorge to São Miguel, two islands in the Azores. And I was lucky enough to sit by the right propeller.
As soon as we were high enough, I was sucked into this image. A world with a floor of clouds and as far as I could see endless shades of white and blue. The plane seemed to belong here, with its dark blue-black colours and its white.
Photographing the spinning propeller blades proved to be a patient exercise full of skewed clouds, visible window edges and rotor blades moving too fast or too slow. And all the while that beautiful view.
It was almost a pity when the landing was initiated. Time to explore São Miguel.
