Anhinga is a genus of birds in the family of darter birds (Anhingidae). The scientific name of the genus was first validly published in 1760 by Brisson. Darter birds resemble cormorants, but they differ from them by their narrow sharp bill, long, heron-like neck, different plumage, and longer tail. They are not part of the cormorant family, but they are classified in the same order as the cormorants. The American darter differs most from the other three species by, among other things, lacking a maroon neck. In the last century, the African darter (A. rufa) and the Australian darter (A. novaehollandiae) were still considered subspecies of the Indian darter.
