About "Antique glasses and teapot in small kitchen window"

by Susan Hol

About the artwork

In the kitchen of my century-old French house, I have a small window. From that window I have a view of the flower garden. The light coming in through the small window is ideal for creating small still life paintings over and over again. A rectangular windowsill under the small window makes that possible.
For this image, I created a still life with an old teapot and small antique glasses. The irregularly cut glasses are for pouring port wine. Tea and port, a crazy combination. Yet both symbolize warmth and coziness. Enjoying tea together, but also having a drink together. What particularly appeals to me are the shapes: the robust yet round of the teapot, and the semicircular shapes of the delicate transparent glasses.
The slanted stripes in the image are from the incident sunlight. The way I have arranged the elements creates the idea that teapot and glass together are looking outward and telling each other all they see.
I edited the photo with photoshop techniques to emphasize the mood of the image.
