California's Joshua Tree National Park, one of the many beautiful places this state has to offer. For work I had to go to Los Angeles and there I had a few days off to do something. This time I had set my sights on the Joshua Tree NP, a good 2-hour drive southeast of the city.
The plan there was to go into the park at night to photograph the Milky Way. There is little light pollution in the park and since it was new moon, the time when the moon is not visible, this was the perfect time for astrophotography. Of course, the weather also had to cooperate and it did this evening. It was windless, crystal clear and with a pleasant temperature of about 20 degrees, it was good to be among the rocks at this arch.
I had explored here in the afternoon to find the right spot to set up my camera. Using an app, I can determine in advance what time and where the Milky Way will surface. Besides, it is useful to explore the way there for a while because it is difficult to orientate at night.
In the end, I got here well in advance which gave me quiet time to set up and adjust everything. Here I made use of my star tracker, a device that lets my camera rotate with the starry sky so that I can use longer shutter speeds without the stars becoming streaks. I then take a number of shots of the night sky that I merge at home using software. This makes the Milky Way clearly visible. I also took a shot of the foreground without the star tracker, which I then merge again with the merged shots of the Milky Way. After that, I still have to work on editing the photo to make it suitable for your wall. In any case, I am very satisfied with the result.
