About ‘Azalea in dark water, Clingendael’ by Marald Bes

The Japanese garden at Clingendael in The Hague, early May, when the azaleas are at their peak.

At the top a shrub in a magenta that almost glows, and below it a mossy rock and a flat stone bridge across the water.

The lower half is the reflection, and that is what this is about. The water is dark brown going on black, which brings the colour out completely differently: the magenta goes deeper and warmer, and the shapes spread into patches. What is sharp above is painted below.

Bottom right, iris leaves stand upright out of the water; bottom left a spray of ferns comes into the frame. Those two greens hold it together.

Look carefully and there is a second shrub in the reflection that in reality falls outside the frame.

The garden only opens eight weeks a year, so this is a narrow window.

For the gardener, and for anyone who knows Clingendael in May.
