Centuries ago, landowners established forests for profit and pleasure. Conifers were often planted tight and straight for wood, deciduous and exotic trees often for ornamental purposes. On the sandy soils in the Spanderswoud between Hilversum and Bussum, straight beech avenues were interspersed with curving beech avenues. Lovely to wander through this photogenic forest, especially in autumn when the autumn colours emerge. Or when the mist makes everything soft and mysterious in the forest.
