About ‘Beneath the Rijksmuseum — Amsterdam’ by Maarten Steunenberg

I took this photograph in the passageway beneath the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Cyclists and pedestrians make their way through the vaulted tunnel towards the light at the end; their silhouettes stand out sharply against the bright opening, casting long shadows across the cobblestones. Above them, the brick arches curve like a cathedral.

What strikes me about this image is the contrast between the place and its use. The passage is monumental, almost sacred — and yet it is simply a passageway through which Amsterdammers cycle every day, mobile phone in hand, on their way to their next destination. That contrast between grandeur and everyday traffic is precisely what makes the city so unique. The backlighting turns every passer-by into a silhouette, and the tunnel into a frame for the light.

For me, this image brings together two things I love to photograph: architecture and the unpredictable moment. The arches are fixed, the people are moving — and for a brief instant, they came together to form this composition.

What are the delivery times?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
