About ‘Mount Fuji above Owakudani’ by Maarten Steunenberg

In the foreground, bare, withered branches — the remains of trees that could not withstand the sulphurous fumes rising from the volcanic soil of Owakudani, the ‘ "hellendal" ’ near Hakone. Behind them, in the distance, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji, half-hidden amongst the clouds.

I took this photograph after a cable car ride across Owakudani, where the air smells of sulphur and the rocks have been discoloured to a yellow hue by centuries of volcanic activity. The vegetation there has a hard time of it — some trees cannot survive the gases and are left bare and blackened. Just beyond that area, the view of Fuji opened up.

I found the contrast between those withered branches in the foreground and the serene, white summit in the background too beautiful not to photograph. Two extremes of the same volcanic landscape: destruction up close, tranquillity in the distance.

For me, black and white emphasised that contrast most strongly — no colour to distract, just form, texture and the interplay of light in the clouds.

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
