About ‘Ueno, rush hour — Tokyo’ by Maarten Steunenberg

I took this photo at Ueno station in Tokyo, looking out over the entrance to the Ameyayokocho market. At the bottom, the crowd flows in and out of the market; on the left, the railway tracks curve away in a long bend; and everywhere, Japanese advertising hoardings jostle for attention. A city bursting at the seams, captured in a single image.

What strikes me about this image is the controlled chaos. Hundreds of people, dozens of signs, intersecting tracks — and yet it all works; everyone knows where they’re going. That’s Tokyo: overwhelming and orderly at the same time. The harsh backlighting causes the background to fade to almost white, so that the skyline dissolves and the hustle and bustle in the foreground stands out all the more.

For me, this is the opposite of my quieter cityscapes. No empty water or solitary figure, but the full energy of a metropolis — the sort of place where you pause because there’s simply too much to take in.

In an interior, this is an image that fills a wall with life. There is an endless amount to discover: the characters, the traces, the faces in the crowd. It appeals to lovers of Japan and Tokyo, to those who have been there, and to those who love energetic, detailed urban photography.

What are the delivery times?

At Art Heroes we do not mass produce or keep stock, but make to order. Your artwork is made with passion by experienced craftsmen and is on average ready for shipment in 7 business days. Details on the exact delivery date will be sent after placement of the order. Depending on the shipping country the following delivery times apply:

Is your order a gift for someone? We can create you a gift voucher that displays the artwork(s) you ordered, so you have something to give while the artwork is being printed. Just send us an e-mail and we’ll take care of it.

How will the package be sent?

We work with several carriers, mainly UPS and DHL (Depending on the country where it is delivered, this may vary). Couriers can also be used for large or fragile packages.

Canvas are securely packed in plastic bubble wrap and cardboard. Wallpaper and posters are sent in sturdy tubes.

A courier collects the package from us and takes the package to a depot where it usually stays overnight. The day after it is collected and delivered to your home or office. We work with courier services that specialise in handling fragile parcels.

Not at home? Then the delivery driver will leave a note and an appointment can be made to schedule a new delivery.

Unfortunately, there remains a chance that something can happen during a shipment. In the unlikely event that your parcel has been damaged during transit, please take a picture of the entire item, the damage, the entire package and a picture of the shipping label. Send these photos to us by email and we will solve the problem without delay.
