Berlin on the Spree
At the time of the Cold War, the Spree here was the border between east and west Berlin.
The Oberbaumbrücke (1894) with its two striking towers consists of two levels, one for car traffic and pedestrians and one for the metro. In WWII, the bridge was badly damaged and was not restored until after German reunification ('94).
The Universal building 'Eierspeicher' (1929) on the right was a cold store until 2000 and could cool up to 75 million eggs. During the GDR, east Germans earned by refrigerating products for west Germans here due to difference in economic model. Afterwards, the cooling building was no longer profitable.
The 368m television tower from '69 was the second tallest tower in the world after construction and still the tallest in Germany.
From my exhibition in Amsterdam (Orange Church until November 26, 2023), I decided to open this shop after all the extremely enthusiastic responses.
