About ‘Between the clouds and the mudflats’ by Lex Schulte

On Engelsmanplaat, in the heart of the Wadden Sea, time seems to stand still for a moment. In this photograph, a sailing boat rests on the exposed mudflats, surrounded by a vast landscape of water, sand and sky. The dark, threatening clouds form a striking contrast to the soft light on the horizon. The boat’s red hull and the striking red buoy bring colour to the subdued palette of grey, blue and sand. What makes this image special is the combination of tranquillity and drama. The reflective water in the foreground mirrors the sky and the boat’s mast, whilst a weathered pole rises from the mudflats as a striking feature. Two small human figures by the boat emphasise the immense scale and vast emptiness of the landscape. Everything in the composition seems to come together: the boat, the water, the clouds and the endless horizon. Engelsmanplaat is an uninhabited sandbank in the Dutch part of the Wadden Sea, situated between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. At low tide, a large part of the area is exposed, and the landscape is constantly changing under the influence of the tides, wind and currents. It is precisely this constant change that makes a visit to the mudflats so special: no moment and no landscape is ever exactly the same.
The Wadden Sea is a unique nature reserve where land and sea constantly influence one another. The area is renowned for its vast mudflats, channels, birds and the rhythm of the tides. This photograph captures that characteristic sense of space and transience: a brief moment when the sea has receded and the impressive landscape of the mudflats is revealed in its entirety.
