About ‘Black and white puffin’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

A puffin bobs almost alone in a sea of black. With its head turned backwards, it rests amongst its feathers, whilst its white breast and face stand out clearly against the dark water. Beneath the bird, a few small ripples catch the light and form a subtle trail in the darkness.

What moves me about this photograph is the vast expanse of space surrounding the bird. The puffin appears relatively small in the frame and seems to have withdrawn entirely into its own world. There is no landscape to demand attention, and scarcely any horizon or surroundings to be discerned. Only the bird, the water and the light remain.

The choice of black and white reinforces that simplicity. The deep blacks lend the image an almost graphic quality, whilst the soft feathers and reflections lend it a sense of refinement. The vertical composition and the dark space above the bird emphasise the sense of stillness and seclusion.

For me, this image is about peace and security. In the midst of a vast, dark landscape, the puffin needs nothing more than its own feathers to find a moment’s respite. A small and fragile moment in the wild.

On the wall, this photograph has a minimalist and tranquil feel. The deep shades of black give it a powerful presence, whilst the small, light-coloured subject draws the eye to itself. A piece that looks particularly beautiful in a calm, modern interior and invites you to linger a little longer.
