About ‘Flight across the dark water’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

A puffin pushes off from the water and takes to the air. Its wings are already spread, whilst one red leg is still almost touching the water. Behind it, a trail of splashing droplets remains, allowing you to follow the movement across the frame, as it were.

For me, it is precisely that split second that makes this photograph so special. A second earlier, the bird was still on the water; a second later, it would already be flying. The splashing droplets, the outstretched legs and the position of the wings capture exactly that transition.

The low, warm light falls only on the puffin and a few parts of the landscape in the background. As a result, the bird almost seems to emerge from the dark water. Its distinctive beak, white head and red-orange legs stand out against the deep, dark surroundings.

For me, the photograph conveys both energy and tranquillity. There is plenty of movement, yet the dark background and the space surrounding the bird ensure the image remains calm and atmospheric. It feels like a fleeting moment from the wild, one that is usually over before you’ve had a proper chance to see it.

On the wall, this piece makes for a dark, powerful focal point. The warm highlights and the light on the puffin give the image depth without losing its understated atmosphere. A photograph for lovers of birds, rugged northern landscapes and the beauty of capturing exactly the right moment.
