About ‘Light in the darkness’ by Rudy Haringhuizen

A puffin floats alone on the dark water. Almost the entire surroundings are lost in deep shadows, whilst a narrow beam of light falls precisely upon the bird. Its white face, distinctive beak and pale plumage thus seem almost to glow out of the blackness.

For me, this photograph is primarily about light and stillness. The puffin is small within the frame and surrounded by an immense expanse of dark space. This conveys a sense of seclusion, but not of loneliness. The bird seems perfectly at home, bobbing calmly on the sea and untroubled by everything around it.

The dark editing is deliberately a key part of the image. By allowing much of the detail in the shadows to fade away, the photograph is reduced to its essence: water, light and a single bird. The subtle reflection beneath the puffin provides just enough texture in the water to make that stillness palpable.

What appeals to me is that this lends a small moment in nature an almost theatrical quality. As if the light were to flicker on for a brief instant, the puffin emerges from the darkness and can then disappear once more across the dark water.

On the wall, this is a understated yet striking piece. The large dark areas convey a sense of calm, whilst the light-coloured subject immediately draws the eye. An atmospheric image for lovers of minimalist photography, birds and the mysterious natural world of the far north.
