Boot Arch in the Alabama Hills is a unique rock formation that immediately stands out for its unusual shape. Already impressive during the day, this place turns into a magical backdrop at night. For this photo, I wanted to capture the Milky Way exactly above the arch, a composition that requires some preparation and patience.
I arrived well in time to explore the area and set up my camera and tripod properly. As I wanted to capture the stars as sharp and bright as possible, I used a star tracker. This allowed me to apply a slower shutter speed without the stars moving, revealing the full splendor of the Milky Way.
For me, the combination of the rugged rocks in the foreground and the endless starry sky beyond gives this image something timeless. It shows how small we actually are compared to nature and the universe.
At home in the Netherlands, I pay a lot of attention to post-processing. With a big screen, my Wacom tablet and a cup of coffee, I work carefully on the details so that the atmosphere of that night is preserved as much as possible. The result is an image that shows not only the beauty of Boot Arch, but also the sense of silence and wonder I experienced there. A picture that can be an eye-catcher in any room.
