Castel Sant'Angelo (Castle of the Angels) in beautiful Rome photographed at night.
Photo taken in April 2018.
The Castle of the Angels (Italian Castel Sant' Angelo) is a monument in Rome.
The Castle of the Angels takes its name from a legend. On Christmas Day 590, Pope Gregory I held a great solemn church procession to beg God to end the plague epidemic. On top of the mausoleum the archangel Michael appeared. The angel put his sword in its scabbard, which meant that Gregory's prayer had been heard and the fight against the plague was over. Pope Pius II had a chapel built on the spot where the archangel is said to have appeared. The statue dating from 1752 of the Archangel Michael on top of the building was made by Pieter Antoon Verschaffelt.
